No, Peter Perrett was the singer/songwriter. John Perry was indeed
the Ones' lead guitarist and that's almost certainly his break.
Some other folks mentioned the Church: I think the entire song
"Reptile" was written solely to support that one point just before the
final verse and chorus, where the entire band drops out for a beat at
the end of the solo and then Marty comes back with the primary riff.
But I nominate that circular riff at the bridge in Shuggie Otis'
"Strawberry Letter 23," which the Brothers Johnson copied outright on
their version of the song.
