Why not just use CvS's "Everything Own" from his Big White Lies disc?
Can't do it any better than that.

 Agreed!! CVS nailed it.

Ever since I heard that song was about
David Gate's late father, I've ben unable to listen to it.

Interesting (to me anyway) how songs effect all of us differently. Oddly
enough, a few years ago, I also became aware of the sad truth behind this
song too. But, I had the opposite reaction. I find it much his pleas much
more poignant given the loss of his father, rather then being yet "another
break up song". The extremes of his bargaining seems more "truthful"
somehow (to me).
But, I can understand how knowing this could make it a more difficult
listen for someone too.

Possible thread..??
Song lyrics that once you learned the background of the lyric (or artist's
said intensions of the song) that were different then how you had
interpreted them, and then how it impacted your enjoyment of the song.
For example, learning that CVS's "Doctor" is about his mother made the song
even more powerful to my listening experience.
I know this has happened many times to me but nothing else is coming up at
the moment... maybe later....
Anyone care to contribute?
