My local flea market closed down about two years ago. On the final day I
went to see if I could catch some bargains from my favourite vinyl supplier.
Alas, he'd packed up early and taken all his stock with him. However, as I
was passing by the booths and their clear-out sales I happened by an antique
furniture dealer who had just sold a vintage 1957 jukebox....but, the new
owner wasn't interested in two orange crates full of the 45's that had
filled the jukebox originally. I looked through the boxes of singles sorting
out the Canadian stuff from everything else. I managed to find a bunch of
Spartan Canada/ABC-Paramount Paul Anka and Tony Kingston singles and a few
other acts (Guy Lombardo included). I asked the guy how much he wanted for
the 9 singles. He said $20.
I fished out the money, handed it to him and went to leave when the guy
yelled for me to come back. "Hey, you forgot your records". No....got 'em
right here, I said, waving the 9 singles in the air.
"No, no, no.....the $20 was for both crates....take 'em, I don't want to
have to load them out at the end of the day".
The haul was unbelievable. Not just the Sparton titles. There was 112
records all circa 1955-1960; Eddie Arnold, The Mills Brothers, Danny & The
Juniors, The Champs, Mary Ford & Les Paul, and other Top-40 titles from the
Golden Age of rock and roll.
I've been slowly selling the non-Canadian stuff on Ebay. To date, I've
managed to make about $480 USD....I still have 60 of these records left.
There's probably $1200 worth of stuff here total. You gotta love when things
like this happen....all for a $20 investment.
