...Stan Ridgway, former lead singer of Wall of Voodoo.
I went online the other day and did a search for the phrase "by Will Harris." Putting aside how egotistical that probably sounds (I just think it's cool to see where some of my stuff turns up), one of the results came from Stan Ridgway's website, where he or his webmaster had posted my review of his latest album, "Snakebite," as it appeared on PopMatters.com.
On a whim, I dropped him an E-mail and asked, with the appropriate emoticon to indicate that I didn't really feel like I was really owed anything at all, "Hey, seeing as you've got my review on your site, how would you feel about my sending you a CD cover to get autographed?"
His webmaster promptly wrote back and said, "Stan would be honored to do so." So I sent him the CD cover, along with postage for the cover's return trip...
...and, today, I received back not only the cover (autographed, "Bless you, Will and Jenn! You are the bright lights in our basement! Thanks, Stan Ridgway") but also Ridgway's 2-disc live album, a DVD containing all of his videos...both solo and from Wall of Voodoo...and lots of live material, and a bumper sticker that reads, "Ask your doctor about Snakebite; StanRidgway.com."
Whether you like the guy's music or not, you gotta admit, that's a helluva nice gesture...
