What is also disturbing is how many of us are not playing our
vinyl.Tom said he hasn't had a turntable in 10 years.Your vinyl is in
storage. My Thorens is at the shop for a belt and cartridge/cleaning.But
prior to that it was not working for the last 5 years. We seem to be content
with our cd's until a thread like this starts up.

I say:

No no no! <smile> I've been slowly ripping loads of vinyl to my pc, cleaning it
up and burning it to CD-R for many years now (as have many on this list). I'm
most pleased with the results. I have my original Dual 1257 (belt replaced also)
hooked up to my Dell via a nice little preamp and I monitor every step of the
way using my Sony MDR-V6's. The last three I did (this weekend, in fact) were:

Style Council, Singular Adventures of
Sam Phillips, Indescribable Wow
Bodeans, Outside Looking In

I choose these (and others, I've got about 20 more to go until I'm <ahem>
"finished") out of my larger vinyl collection for a wide variety of reasons:
(here are just a few)

The lp sounds pristine and makes a fine candidate for transfer. I get the warmth
of the sun, I mean, the record, so why buy the disc when I can make my own
"custom" model? I can also scan and print liner notes and artwork.

I want to hear the record and cash is short to buy the compact disc. A ripped
and burned version will suffice until the cash rolls in.

The title hasn't been released yet on CD. Has Dead Letter Office been released
on CD yet? It hadn't been when I recorded it.

MONO mixes!

Yes, it's (sometimes) good to be disabled and unemployed with loads of time on
your hands! <big smile>

King of the well-placed needle-drop,
Jeff T.
Del.
