Picked up the Futureheads disc on the recommendation of a few Auditeers
(incl. the inestimable Mr Brodeen).
Frankly, IMHO, it sucks like a Dyson. I see the Gang of Four and XTC
comparisons, but honestly - where are the tunes? All the songs have time
signatures that vary wildly, melodies are all over the place - not for me I
am afraid. It sounded to me improvisational, kinda like punk-jazz (is that
a new genre?) and I never did like improv. jazz: as a friend once said to
me, "Sounds like they make it up as they go along" . "That's the whole
point, but it still sounds garbage to me", I think was my reply.
Anyway the nice people in HMV Edinburgh will happily let you exchange
unwanted CDs within 21 days of purchase, so armed with my reason for the
exchange ("This album is sh*t"), I swapped it for The Killers' "Hot Fuss"
which on first coupla listens is MAGNIFICENT - Strokes / New Order sundae,
frosted with Duran Duran sprinkles. And, most importantly, insanely great
pop tunes that you can hear.
The other big album I picked up recently was Green Day's "American Idiot",
it's an absolute corker - nothing innovatory, but the playing, singing,
production and songwriting are just so strong, I can't stop playing it.
