Chiming in on a few recent posts:
Always loved Game Theory and Loud Family, though I vaguely recall hearing about another Scott Miller project - after Loud Family I think. What am I trying to think of??? Sadly, all my Game Theory is on vinyl, and my turntable's screwy now. I need a new one.
My current obscession: ELO - "Out of the Blue". I love, love, love this record. Started spinning it after hearing discussion of Jeff Lynne's solo "Amchair Theater," which incidentally I then went and tracked down on E-Bay - it should arrive soon.
Someone recently posted about Any Trouble. I always liked their first, "Where Are All The Nice Girls?" best. Geat, authentic, skinny-tie pop. They followed up with the more robust, more polished "Wheels In Motion." A band trying to muster sophistication, up the ante as it were. Then came their eponymous third, an attempt to jump on the synthy/new wave bandwagon. Kinda misguided, but even the synth-y arrangements couldn't sink some good Clive Gregson songs. Lastly, "Wrong End of the Race," an ambitions double album w/ remakes of the own stuff, covers, etc. At this point, they're kinda studio pros, and there's not much youth or enthusiasm to be heard. But you still got great guests like Richard Thompson, Billy Bremner, Ian Matthews...(Anyone remember Ian Matthews album of Jules Shear covers?).
Clive Gregson went on to make some great folky records w/ Christine Collister, and other solo stuff beyond that. Not sure if he's still around, but he was a songwriting "playa" in his day.
