I've been outspoken about artists selling their songs for commercials-- for example, the Who; don't come to my town, play "Won't Get Folled Again," and expect me to pump my fist in the air like it means anything, because it doesn't. (Actually, son't come to my town at all; I saw you without Entwistle, and you suck now. There's such a thing as knowing when its over.)

But I tend to reserve these feelings for (wealthy) 60s icons, who are still viable as touring acts because of the emotional connections these songs are supposed to have made with the audience. "Stacey's Mom" is-- I don't want to say "throwaway," but it is a relatively lightweight, fun little tune who's inclusion in an ad hurts no one, and may even (I know its a stretch) be seen as adding to its art by its commercial use (in a Warhol/Campbell Soup kind of way.) Maybe I have a double standard. I can live with that; it wouldn't be the first time.
