I certainly don't have any problem with FOW licensing the song, which -- not
that there's anything wrong with this -- is not a particulary "deep" song to
begin with. (I mean, it's not like it's a political protest song for Pete's
sake!) But for me the problem with the commercial is that the mother is
bringing the Dr. Pepper to a group that's made up exclusively of boys. If
she's "Stacy's Mom," then who and where is Stacy?
On a semi-related absurd note, a few years back someone contacted me about
using the theme song I wrote for the film "Happiness" for a Hyundai campaign
in Australia. I agreed to it, but, given the fact that the film is all about
pedophilia, rape and all kinds of other unpleasantness, I guess it wasn't
suprising when they decided not to use the song after all.
