Elton is in the same category as Rod Stewart for me...I used to count on him
for wall-to-wall good records, now I have to pan for gold. But there are
really good tracks still surfacing - I think if I took the last 20 years I
could make a killer single album for either artist.

Let's face it - that's a long time for any artist to be expected to maintain
that level of quality. No one has - Stones, Kinks, Beach Boys, etc. Revering
the Beatles as perfect is James Dean syndrome - they died on top before they
had the chance to peter out. I'm glad the artists that do hang in there at
least continue to have the opportunity to hit the target. (For example,
IMNSHO, Ian Hunter, Peter Wolf and Eric Burdon are three vets who recently
released the best solo work of their respective careers).

And as for what the artists do - fine. If Rod wants to be Tony Bennett and
Elton wants to be Liberace (again), they've earned the right. No one is
putting a gun to your head to match you watch, listen or spend. Do I wish
they were still releasing GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD and EVERY PICTURE TELLS
A STORY? Hell yeah. But I also wish I could still leg out that triple when I
slap one in the alley.
