The whole McCartney thing is tough because he has produced so much ... it
would be nice if he were better at self-editing, but the total volume of
brilliance he has produced is still greater than that of most other
musicians. The problem is that he has diluted it with a lot of ... less
brilliant stuff.
I tend to assess a McCartney album based on how many "skip-over" tracks it
has. Obviously that's just as subjective as any other measure, but for me
the best albums in that respect are "Band On The Run" (zero skip-overs),
"Tug Of War" (one), and "Flaming Pie" (two). Actually, I think "Back To The
Egg" is another with zero skip-overs, but there aren't any standout tracks
either.
There are several McCartney albums I don't really know that well, but I'd be
surprised if there's a single one that has nothing of value. Having said
that, though, I almost can't stand listening to "Off The Ground," mostly
because of a couple of songs that are so bad they seem to infect everything
else.
I thought "Driving Rain" was about 50% skip-over, 50% really good. (But hey,
I like "Freedom," and I have yet to meet anyone else who will admit that.)
