Best Albums:

1) Nirvana - With The Lights Out...I know, I know. It's a collection (some classify it a re-issue - I can argue that one) and technically shouldn't qualify for this list but most of this box is new to my ears and will be to yours as well. For me, this is the most important rock release since Nevermind in '91. I dare you listen to this personal, historical journey without getting weepy. Sad yet thoroughly exhilarating. Easily, the most important release of the year.

2) Keane - Hopes And Fears...This was my # 1 pick all year until I listened to the Nirvana box at the end of November. I haven't felt so emotionally attached to a group of songs since, well, since Nirvana's Nevermind landed in my lap 13 years ago. I hope Keane outlives me so I can forever sing along with their new tunes at the top of my lungs (to the annoyance of those around me).

3) Earlimart - Treble & Tremble
4) Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose
5) Brian Wilson - Smile

6) Telecast - Telecast EP...Stumbled on this local band at Spaceland one night this past summer as they opened for the 88. During Telecast's opening tune I immediately turned to the merch table and promptly purchased a copy of this EP out of fear that they would be sold out if I waited till the end of their set. Haven't stopped listening to those four songs since that night. Imagine Clearlake, The Strokes, The Beach Boys and a splash of Morrissey and you just might be able to conjure up this brilliant band's sound. And no I'm not friends with these dudes, don't know them, never spoke to them, nothing like that. Just love to support bands that play great music. See for yourself... http://www.telecasttheband.com/audio.html

7) Wilco - A Ghost Is Born
8) Polyphonic Spree - Together We're Heavy
9) Phoenix - Alphabetical
10) (tie) From Bubblegum To Sky - Nothing Sadder Than Lonely Queen & The Thrills - Let's Bottle Bohemia

Also adored in 2004, in alpha order...

Beastie Boys - To The 5 Boroughs
Elvis Costello - The Delivery Man
Danger Mouse -The Grey Album...(you won't find it in stores so check it out here - http://www.illegal-art.org/audio/grey.html )
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
Green Day - American Idiot
Oscar Jordan - Eclectic Soul...(if Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy & Eddie Van Halen raised a child together - Oscar Jordan would be the results) http://www.oscarjordan.com/
Alison Krauss - Lonely Runs Both Ways
Madeleine Peyroux - Careless Love
Elliott Smith - From A Basement On The Hill
Snow Patrol - Final Straw

Best Soundtrack :
(tie) Team America (funny as hell) & The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (smooth as hell)

Best Single:
Pixies/"Bam Thwok" (this would be perfect material for a new album - hint, hint)

Best Concerts:
1) Brian Wilson @ Walt Disney Concert Hall (LA)
2) Stevie Wonder @ House Of Blues (LA)
3) Keane @ Troubadour (LA)
4) Pixies @ Coachella (Indio, CA)
5) David Bowie @ Wiltern (LA)
6) Prince @ Staples Center (LA)
7) Elvis Costello & The Imposters @ House Of Blues (LA)
8) Polyphonic Spree @ El Rey (LA)
9) Wilco @ Wiltern (LA)
10) Hapa @ Mulligans (Maui, HI)
