I have not heard anything by Nellie but based upon the thread as it has
developed, it caught my attention and made me want to have a listen. One
of the reasons I was going to listen, was the songwriting reference to
Randy Newman as well as the reference to Peggy Lee et. al above. I love
Peggy Lee, a great voice and a great artist. Now my question is does
Nellie have anything in common with the singers, I believe Mike Bennett
referenced, or not? Or was this just another silly comment that dismisses
those who didn't/don't write their own material (in which case I will
easily dismiss the above).

NP - Nathaniel Mayer's new album "I Just Want To Be Held" - this is magic
music. Who would have thought that this album would be possible and that
it would sound so great. Mayer was a very young R&B singer in Detroit in
the early 60's who was on the exotic Fortune label. He had a small hit
with "Village of Love" and cut some excellent songs like "I Want Love and
Affection (Not The House of Correction"). This CD is "real" very real and
it does not sound like someone trying to evoke old time R&B, it is old time
r&b and soul. His voice is raw but he can damn well sing and the backing
band the Fabulous Shanks sound great. This is far, far from power pop,
but it has an undeniable sense of power about it. Mayer's version of John
Lennon's "I Found Out", especially when he sings "feel your own pain" can
give goose bumps.
