One of the best years for music in recent memory, and here's my top 25.
After the first 3, the rest could have been ordered differently depending on
my mood at the moment. I'm not sure if the American Hi Fi and Tim Cullen
CDs actually qualify since AHF isn't supposed to be released in the US until
2005 (does that mean I can vote for it again next year?) and Cullen was
actually released in Japan in 2003. Some have been moving up (/\) and some
down (\/) lately, but this is it at the moment.
01. American Hi Fi - Hearts On Parade
What a comeback from a band that sparked a little interest from their first
CD, then really lost me after that. One of the few things my whole family
can agree on when we get in the car. My kids are completely hooked on The
Geeks Get The Girl, and it is a rock-solid #1 pick.
02. The Argument - Recess Serenade
I loved their first and was ready to be disappointed. Thankfully, another
piece of pure piano pop, which will get me almost every time. Another of
the kids favorites as well.
03. Ashbury Keys - Growing Up
Surprise pick, don't know too much about them except that I'll need to add
their older two to my shopping list for 2005 (although the cover for the s/t
CD scares me a little). More power and less pop that #'s 1 and 2, but
surely one listees would appreciate - RIYL Rubber. Sadly, my kids don't
like this one too much.
04. The Rosenbergs - Department Store Girl
05. The Candy Butchers - Hang On Mike
06. The Queue - Fallout
07. Simple Plan - Still Not Getting Any /\
Moving up with each listen. After having a downloaded copy of this for a
few weeks, it made a good xmas present for my oldest. The included DVD is
pretty lame, but great pop-punk that now gets almost as many listens
upstairs in the kids rooms as it does in my car player.
08. Alva Star - Escalator
09. Bowling For Soup - A Hangover You Don't Deserve /\
Another moving up, although I am getting a little tired of 1985 (I like
SR-71's version better anyway). I bought this one for the kids as well, but
am holding on to it because some of the lyrics aren't necessarily
appropriate. A few bad words now and then is ok, my kids have heard every
bad word from me over the years, but it's too frequent on this one.
10. Silver Sun - Disappear Here \/
I was really excited about this one, but it sounds too much like outtakes
from earlier cds. And while I don't like favorite bands to change their
sound too much (i.e. REM, U2), the same old thing does wear out eventually.
Very good, yes, but great, no.
11. Tal Bachman - Staring Down The Sun
12. Frickin' A - Big Egos No Ideas /\
The more I listen, the more I like. Not quite pop-punk, but close.
13. Big Kid - You Must Be Kidding /\
I'm glad I kept this one around. Rediscovered a couple weeks ago and have
been enjoying since.
14. Hawk Nelson - Letters To The President
15. McFly - Room On The 3rd Floor
16. Riddlin' Kids - Stop The World
17. Maryz Eyez - For All The Haters
18. Ruck Rover - No Hints No Clues No Lies
19. Sugarplum Fairy - Young And Armed /\
Once you get past the start of the first track (where my kids break into
their rendition of a mexican hat dance or something), solid swedish pop.
20. Dogs Die In Hot Cars - Please Describe Yourself \/
Was it a novelty? I really really liked this one for a long time, but
lately I can't listen to more than a couple tracks at a time. Something
different indeed, but will it survive...
21. The Uncle Devil Show - A Terrible Beauty \/
See #20, the notes apply here as well.
22. Creighton Doane - Learning More And More About Less And Less \/
Two songs kill this one for me - See You Next Tuesday and Dear Frankenstein.
Other than those, this would have been in my top 5 for sure. Unexplained
could be a long lost Jellyfish track, and that's a very good thing.
23. Tim Cullen - Fun Razor
24. Split Habit - Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
25. Fastball - Keep Your Wig On
Almost in the top 25:
Adam Richman - Patience And Science
Michael Carpenter - Rolling Ball
Gone Baby Gone - Gone Baby Gone
Cliff Hillis - Better Living Through Compression
Holiday - Living With The Fallout
Holiday With Maggie - Skyline Drive
John Hoskinson - Miscellaneous Heathen
Lit - Lit
Mae - Destination B-Sides
Patrik Tanner - Soft /\
Sanctus Real - Fight The Tide
Seth Swirsky - Instant Pleasure
Sugarcult - Palm Trees And Power Lines
The Davenports - Hi Tech Lowlife
The Dog And Everything - Sound Off
The Jellybricks - Power This
Todd Bowie - Lucky Space People /\
Vinyl Candy - Pacific Ocean Park \/
