If I had to
pick an overrated album for the year, I'll walk a deeper gauntlet than
yours - I'd pick SMILE. I liked most of SMILE, don't get me wrong, and the
live shows (aural only in my case) were incredible. But it just didn't slay
me - I much prefer the original versions of H&V and GV, and others like
"Vegetables" don't click. I truly admire and respect the effort, but to me
it's not Godhead.
Bill,
That's been my reaction too. I have been surprised to see how highly it
has been rated by so many people on this list. Not "surprised" in a sense
that you are all wrong and I am right. Actually, more like I'm must be
"missing it" somehow. But, while I like it, it just doesn't grab me or
compel me to listen to it. It's like a long lost friend that I once knew,
all dressed but something's not quite right, rather then being a new love
(cliché overload). There's something to perfect or precise in it's
execution/production. I don't really know how to describe it but while I
like it, respect it's creation, I don't love it. I do love that Brian has
made it per the "release" it has reportedly given him and the accolades it
has brought him.
On the other side, in terms of "hype" factor. I'm kind of surprised
Nellie McKay's release isn't getting more attention on this list (given I
have seen it mentioned in many year end polls). Stewart loves it, but not
sure if it's on many other people's lists (maybe I'm just not looking close
enough). That said, It's not a pure "power pop" type record so that may be
why. But, it's a splendid disc.
Best, Steve D
