>>Not that I need any help standing up to Stewart Mason, but I can't believe
I'm the only person on the list who feels this way about bands like Franz
Ferdinand....or, maybe I am.

You're not, but I work during the day.

I found the FF record passable and inoffensive with a couple of catchy
tracks, but if I had a magazine cover they would not grace it. If I had to
pick an overrated album for the year, I'll walk a deeper gauntlet than
yours - I'd pick SMILE. I liked most of SMILE, don't get me wrong, and the
live shows (aural only in my case) were incredible. But it just didn't slay
me - I much prefer the original versions of H&V and GV, and others like
"Vegetables" don't click. I truly admire and respect the effort, but to me
it's not Godhead. I heard people were brought to tears by the live show, and
who knows - maybe I would have gotten so caught up seeing this unfold in
front of me knowing what it took BW to get here that I would have joined
them. But that's a live experience, not a cd.

Why overrated? I'm sure that alongside people who are genuinely moved by the
record are a number who are creaming because it's BRIAN and it's SMILE, as
well as the bandwagon-jumpers who figure they'd better cred-load. For an
overrated album that I don't like, I'd give the nod to that steaming pile of
turd by Modest Mouse.

Hate mail will flow. Who cares? I'm sure there are scads of people
completely unimpressed by the fact that I think Eric Burdon quietly released
the album of his (solo) career in 2004. Life's too short to chastise them
individually.

>>I just feel a little put-off by trying to figure out what the "Best of
2004" is when the pool is tainted with over-saturated band like Franz
Ferdinand.

I would hope that - for you - the "best of 2004" is the one you submit with
your name on it. The Audities poll, Pazz&Jop and anything else you read are
nothing more than collective opinions by small focus groups. Rather than get
lathered up by the records I don't like that are high on the charts (if I
wanted to drive myself nuts I have a radio for that), I look at the ones I
haven't heard (or heard that much) and see if I missed anything during the
whirlwind.

And don't dwell on a vulgar retort from Stewart. That just means it's
Thursday. :)
