I don't know that many have done any pitching for specific CDs for this
poll, but I'm going to do that right now. I just want to refresh your
memories on some good stuff (that'll make my list when I et around to
doing it).

PHIL ANGOTTI: Juliette Foster Soundtrack. What a great little album!!
Quiet, understated, totally captivating low-fi acoustic pop that hits me
with touches of Elliott Smith, the Left Banke and Simon & Garfunkel.
There's some stunning guitar and cello playing here, along with
occasional bits of brilliant harmony. Look, even if you don't vote for
the CD because you don't own it yet, put it on your purchase list NOW.

OWSLEY: The Hard Way. Came out at the end of '03, but I don't hink it
got enough votes to qualify for last year's vote. I'm glad it didn't
because this one takes some listening to really be able to move to the
paces Owsley takes us with htis very solid effort. "Matriarch" is a
waltz-like tribute to strong women that is plaintive in its approach to
being an anthem. "She's the One" would fit very well on Will's first
solo outing.

SLOAN: Action Pact. I know this is a favorite band of many here, but I
haven't seen much recent talk about this constantly amazing disc.
Pop-rock with excellent playing from all members, strong songs from
start to finish, a '70s vibe that feels fresh and ready for a big
audience---and maybe the single of the year in "The Rest of My Life".

PILL BUGS: Happy Birthday. I don't know how these guys come up with song
after song of quirky, sometimes kitschy pop. There's a ton of talent all
over this CD, with bits of humor, psychedelia---and ore for the listener
upon each new playing.

KEANE: Hopes & Fears. The midway point between Travis and Coldplay. Now
that may damn this band for some, but what I get is dreamy and sometimes
romantic, keyboard-based brit-pop. Lovely stuff.

SCOTT BENNETT: The Dotted Line. I know the CD is actually by a group
called The Dotted Line, but this is Scott Bennett from Brian Wilson's
band. I'm not quite sure why he has to have a "band" name, but the
effort is mostly solo, albeit with the help of some friends like Brian,
Jeff Foskett, Darian Sahanaja. This is a very good CD that will appeal
to fans of Kyle Vincent, Paul Carrack and Owsley alike.

RUSTY ANDERSON: Undressing Underwater. Maybe this was an '03 release,
but it never seemed to get lots of talk. It is a constantly surprising
CD for its staying power. This is great pop with great melodies,
heart-felt lyrics, strong vocals and some dirty guitars thrown in for
good measure.

While this doesn't constitute my best of the year list, I wanted to make
sure these got some props to bring them back into your radar when it
comes time to vote.
