To clarify...I said that:
1) Elliot Smith was a loser for taking the coward's way out.
2) That fans of this man should not be making him into some kind of martyr.
3) If it turns out his girlfriend killed him after all I owe a big apology
to the fans (a post I made after the coroner released his findings as
inconclusive to confirm a suicide).

Again....my comments in the former issue and the current issue were based on
1) my non-tolerance of suicide as a means to resolve one's personal demons
2) my non-tolerance of a society who thinks allowing the use of firearms in
the hands of the great unwashed (and morons in general) is no way to run a
civilized or democratic society.

I made these comments in the context of two examples that were music
related. The politics got ugly because people didn't like what I had to say
in the narrowness of the conversation....and not at what I was saying about
the BIG picture...which had nothing to do with music at all....or the
individuals in the examples.

I can think of better ways of getting attention.

That would be YOU who thinks I'm asshole, right? Just clarifying.

And to that I salute all of you....that's what this list was designed for, I
believe.

This is only one of THREE lists I frequent because the ratio of intelligent
conversation and great recommendations is the highest I've found around.
But, forgive me if some of us "cranks" don't want to just blindly take
people's word for it when you say that something is great or wonderful. I
want to hear it for myself. Recommendations are a start, but more times than
not I've been truly disappointed....not as much as Segarini sometimes, but
he has another 20 years of music as his personal reference point over me and
he's looking for those little goose-bumps to give him hope that all of pop
musicdom has not gone to hell in a handbasket.

I'm a little more forgiving with my tolerance of generic, cookie cutter
power pop -- I like some of mine derivative. Other times I want something
totally new. I hold out hope that I'll find it here. That's why I stay. But,
to reign in all the emotion that goes along with the societal and political
agendas surrounding this music....and the business many of us are in on this
list would be quite myopic and pointless. Descenting views, whether they're
from me or anyone else on this list shows that we're not all built alike and
that this scene isn't the peace, love and granola mantra of a bunch of power
pop children of The Damned.

I was being facetious.....I actually responded to everyone who wrote me
off-list today. And surprisingly found a lot of support. Again, restoring my
faith in Popkind.

I'm diggin the new Tears For Fears....
