The core point of Michael Moore's movie-- and I'm no fan of his-- was that 
Canada had equivalent numbers of guns per capita to the US, but far less gun 
violence per capita, so that there must be something endemically "American" 
to gun violence (and not laws, because again gun penetration is similar in 
Canada; the Canadians aren't keeping guns out of the hands of their 
citizens).  Interestingly, as I understand it, A preponderance of the 
Canadian population lives within say 75 miles of the US border, so something 
really does seem to be going on when you cross that border.

Off the top of my head my favorite pop song about gun violence is the World 
Party cover of "Happiness is a Warm Gun."  I only mention that to be on 
topic.  (My favorite song about spousal abuse, if you're wondering, is "He 
Hit Me (And it Felt Like a Kiss.)"  And no, I don't think that's the least 
bit funny.  Quite the contrary.)
