<<So some bands sound uncannily like the Beatles and make CDs of near 100%
replica covers of Beatles songs. Can anyone explain to me the point of this
(other than "Look how much this one sounds like the original!")? Granted such
bands probably have a good following for live gigs, cos most of us were too young
to see The Beatles in concert. But CDs too? I can't imagine ever wanting to
listen to them in preference to the originals.
Far more interesting to me are bands who either do their own songs in Beatles
style (eg Spongetones, or even Rutles!) or do Beatles covers in a different
way (eg. The Punkles from Germany - they only do Beatles covers in Ramones
style!).>>
Speaking for myself, Bob, I only enjoy the combos that take the songs that
the Beatles wrote but DIDN'T record (like "Step Inside Love," "If You've Got
Troubles," ""Goodbye," etc.) and interpret them in the Beatles style. They're
fun to listen to, IMHO. In no way would I ever want to hear a CD by some
tribute band that covers well-known---or even not as well-known--tunes that the
Beatles actually officially released.
I saw an ad recentlytouting a live album by some third-rate Doors tribute
band and thought, "Jesus, what's the point?" I mean, the Doors released live
albums themselves (unfortunately)...
Like you, I also enjoy some acts that have the Beatles sound down pat, but
write their own cool tunes: Spongetones, Rutles, Pleasers and Liverpool Echo
(released in the UK in 1973, featuring a young Martin Briley), not to mention
Utopia's DEFACE THE MUSIC. Never cared much for that Vinyl Kings record,
though...to sterile for my tastes.
