Yeah, that thought crossed my mind as well.  Then you have the girl, Whatsername.  There are several songs about her... "She's A Rebel", "Extraordinary Girl", "Letterbomb" and "Whatsername".

She brings up the dual personality to him in one of the songs.  The only thing that gets me is at the end, in The Death Of St. Jimmy where it says "Jimmy died today.  He blew his brains out into the bay"   I guess he could just be killing off his alter ego, but it makes it sound almost like a separate person there.
