Performing at the First Avenue and the club-within-a-club Seventh St. Entry
offered my band its first glimpse of the 'big time', emerging as we did from
an impoverished ass-backwards factory town (the Illinois Quad Cities) that
ignored us, no matter what we tried ("Hey! Let's wear cowboy hats during 'My
Generation'!").
FA manager Steve McClelland was always decent to us (if incredibly
distracted--the first time we met his underwear was tucked outside of his
shirt) and we were quite surprised (given our background) to find an
ice-filled tub of refreshments backstage the first time we headlined the
Entry (over Green).
The thrill of meeting The Jayhawks' Mark Olsen (he was a dishwasher), seeing
Dave Pirner drunk and knowing Prince peed in the same urinals was truly the
stuff dreams are made of for a little band from Moline.
