Greg:
Thanks for finally bringing up early U2. I may be in the minority on this
list, but I've bought every U2 record, save Pop, and have found something to
love in all of them.
True, Bono's rock star antics may get tedious from time to time, but I never
would have picked up a bass and started playing music were it not for seeing
the "Sunday Bloody Sunday," video for the first time waaay back in 1983 (I
was 13 at the time).
It's easy to slag them for being a bloated stadium act, but you can make a
pretty credible argument for the fact that they're responsible for (IMHO)
three of the best albums of the rock era. That'd be "War," "Joshua Tree,"
and "Achtung Baby." All three still blow me away -- no matter how many times
I hear them.

When I think about it, the passion of those early records is something that
seems to be missing from today's rock acts. Even if you thought they were
full of crap, there was no contesting that U2 believed in what they were
doing and were (it seemed then, and still seems now) trying to make a
difference.
I know we don't like our rock stars to have political opinions these days,
but the best art has always been social criticism. I'm always amazed how
quickly people forget that.

So, I guess that's a long-winded way of saying that I'll be buying the newie
and expect to groove on it as much as I've grooved on the past records. :)

Cheers,
John.
