IPO Boston was an abbreviated experience for me, as I was called away on
some family business. However I did catch the better part of two
evenings.
On opening night, John Larson and pal got the evening off to a great
start. I had picked up the Marlowes latest CD during IPO Boston 2003,
and it's been a steady favorite.
I thought that Bowman did a pretty good set - but my expectations were
set a bit high by all the praise on this list, so I did feel a little
disappointed (the CD's pretty good though). I thought Spiraling was
just ok - not very strong vocally, IMHO. My faves had to be Lemonpeeler
and Vinyl Skyway who both turned in strong, rootsy sets.
I was also present for part of Friday evening's show. It led off with a
great acoustic set by Dave (I think) and Corin, late of the Pills. It
was a pleasure to meet Jeremy Morris, and he and his band played an
amazing set with tight rhythms, soaring harmonies and Jeremy's guitar
hero antics. It was a shame he couldn't have played a little later in
the evening - he would've torched the place! I also very much enjoyed
King Radio's fine set, but a noisy bar is not the best venue for them
(or perhaps it was my perch at the merch table).
It was disappointing not to have seen more but, to quote a Boston band
from another era, "life sucks". I was particularly looking forward to
seeing and hearing the Flashcubes, Charlie Chesterman, IKE and Cliff
Hillis. It was great seeing David, Andrea, Jay, etc and getting to meet
a few more great folks!
