I haven't heard any of the new U2, but I have to admit to being in the
probable minority here in that I like U2 in all their self-righteous glory.
Give me Joshua Tree over almost any other 80s album any day of the week. At
that point they did perhaps the only thing possible and lapsed into
self-parody-- ironically (naturally) winning them much favor with those who
had burned out on earnest U2. They generally proceeded to lose me until All
That You Can Leave Behind-- but if you listened, the old U2 still cropped
up; would "One" have been totally out of place on Joshua Tree? If the new
U2 is as good as the last one, I'll be thrilled with it. Remember that
70-minute show they did on the radio from Irving Plaza when the last album
came out? That stuff totally smoked. I can see being turned off by Big
Corporate Rock, but I still dig U2.

By the way-- 2 bands worth noting yesterday from IPO. The Marianne
Pillsburys-- or Marianne Pillsbury, it wasn't clear to me and their/her
materials billed the act both ways-- were sexy, poppy, described (and I
think aptly, if you go for this kind of capsule description) as being "as
frank as Liz Phair and as peppy as the Go-Gos." I dug 'em and so did the
crowd-- 8 CDs sold the whole afternoon, and 5 were hers (including the one I
bought and that she brilliantly and sexily and playfully signed for me.)
Check 'em out at their self-titled website. Boo Hoo! I liked 'em!
Favorite song titles off the album: "Ex-ex-boyfriend;" "Layaway Girlfriend."
Haven't played it yet. I think I will right now.

Then Lane and Steve of Tan Sleeve performed in a duo format. I'm a friend
of Lane's and a sucker for them, so don't go by me. But do go buy their
record, Bad From Both Sides. As David said, how often does a band cover
Zappa and the Beatles in the same set? (The day before, solo, Lane covered
the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Milton Nascimiento-- segueing into one of his
tunes-- in the original Portugese.)

Tip for tonight: Soul Engines. Saw them last year and they were stunning.
