some highlights from last weekend:

the churchills - a great set of smart, sophisticated pop. tight and
catchy, with unexpected changes throughout. (i think i stole the word
"sophisticated" from the official ipo program. oops.)

spiraling - i loved that the keyb-playing frontman had his keybs on
stands angled away from him and toward the audience (i.e. instead of
looking at the brand name on the back of the thing, we were staring
right at the keys). it's the kind of position you imagine somewhat would
want his keybs in if he had grown up playing handheld keybs, as that's
pretty much the angle they were at from his perspective. their
new-wave-prog songs didn't do a lot for me, but i loved just watching him.

special pillow - pop with a skewed americana feel, a violin and a
12-string lead gtr, the kind of thing you could kinda sorta see stephen
malkmus doing when he mellows out a bit.. really nice set.

red team - a great energetic pop set that led me to write in my diary,
"shins meet the beatles at the star club in hamburg." not sure exactly
what that means but i know it's good. most songs ended with a ringing
beatles chord. 15 bonus points for the lefty telecaster-playing
guitarist who stood exactly where i had stood with my lefty telecaster
moments earlier. mine's a cooler color. but he was getting a better
sound. damn him.

trouble dolls - we wore color-coordinated outfits. i hope somebody noticed.

matty
