I didn't think the Songs From the West Coast album was
that hot. Much like the last Bee Gees album, the
songs aren't sharply crafted enough (though SFTWC was
much better than the last Bee Gees disc). Elton
replicates his '70s sound, but the songs wander around
for 4 or 5 minutes, without, for the most part,
sharply focused hooks. This seems to be a common
malady for long-time vets - they can reach back to
their glory days, and make song in the same mold, but
they can't close the deal.
