As Stewart stated,Franz Ferdinand definitely mine from the Postcard Records stable (Orange Juice/Josef K and even some Fire Engines ) more than Gang of Four (although... see most of the current NYC scene for Gang of Four influences).
I ordered the Society of Rockets disc last week from Parasol as soon as I saw that it is Shimmer Kids under a new name . I still keep their Book of Mirrors disc next to my computer for whenever I want to listen to Revenge is Sweet.
Some things I am currently digging:
Pubert Brown Fridge Occurrence-A Once And Future Thing (Groovy neo psych from down under but not on Camera Obscura but Laughing Outlaw) I bought mine at www.notlame.com
Frank Lenz-Conquest Slaughter (great new disc on www.velvetbluemusic.com that is a departure from his funky Hot Stuff disc and closer in range to his Lassie Foundation releases) I recommend it if you are fan of Lassie,Autumns,Prayer Chain, etc.
Ulysses-010 (new side project from Robert Schneider of Apples in Stereo has an Apples influence but is not a clone) I have listened to this 4 times already and am enjoying it more with each listen. It has a little less bubblegum sound than Apples and maybe a little more of a 70s rock sound. It kind of reminds me of Sloan circa Navy Blues fronted by the leader of Apples In Stereo.
Here si a link to some tracks: http://www.eeniemeenie.com/audio_video.htm
and Speaking of Apples in Stereo...Hilarie Sidney's new side project is very enjoyable as well. On the same label as Ulysses (Eenie Meenie Records) her band ,the High Water Marks has released Songs About the Ocean .This is a great slice of 60s influenced pop that would make her Elephant 6 family proud.. I see Not Lame carries it as it is in the latest update :
High Water Marks - Songs About The Ocean - $14.00
Take a bushel of Apples, a bag of Oranger, a touch of Palermo and wrap it up in Von Hemmling to get a poppy conglomeration of side projects and some fantastic tunes. Features Hillary Sidney (Apples in Stereo/Secret Square), Per Ole Bratset (Palermo), Jim Lindsay (Oranger & Preston School of Industry). "4 stars..Clock stopping, pulse-raising mega-pop. The sound of sherbert and acid fizzing in tandem....the 13 are so vivid here they give off an aura comparable to the Velvets. They are not really generic power pop nor are they typically East Coast"-Uncut. From the jangling drive of the album opener "Good I Feel Bad" to the fuzzy swell & open-aired elation of "Queen of Verlaine", The High Water Marks play w/the intensity of a shimmering & distortion saturated supernova. So what if hemispheres collide in crashing chords, and purple mountains collapse, and fruited planes swarm in beautiful buzzing clouds? They are not concerned. They plug in and make it happen. A striking debut from the Elefant Six Family Tree..
Check it Out!
