Hey, that's funny! I was there too. And unlike Michael, I was not
drinking . . .

Ira is mostly correct. The openers were Three Colors (from NC, I think)
and Boston's O Positive. Three Colors were ok, big falloff after the
best 3 or 4 songs, definitely having fun with it. O Positive was great
with those jangly tremoloey guitars. (Their college radio hit was With
You, if you're trying to remember it.)

The Connells played a full set, then announced upcoming "special guests".
There was a long break before the guests came out, and a couple
Connells, having played their whole set, entertained the crowd with an
impromptu, silly "Wanted Dead or Alive". Rumors flew that the guests
were anything from The Hooters to Springsteen. Finally, the Roger
Hodgson-less lineup of Supertramp took the stage and played TWO songs on
their own. One was Born on the Bayou, which did jam on a bit long. The
other was a Berry cover, I think. Then, members of Three Colors, O
Positive and The Connells joined the Tramp for a pretty version of
Knocking On Heaven's Door. There were no blues standards, Ira!

I had a wonderful time at that show, and the next day, still jazzed from
the experience, I wrote one of my best songs. Surprise -- it's jangly.
In later years, I would often name this show as one of the best I had
ever seen. So it's ironic that another person there was so strongly
turned off by it. Guess that's what makes the world go round . . .

BTW, the long-gone Chestnut Cabaret remains #2 on my list of favorite
venues, behind only legendary Maxwell's. Poor Philly!
