Dunno if any of you guys have caught this show on UK Channel 4 at all.
Each week, they pick a decade (working in reverse from 90's to 50's) and
document 10 acts which a "top panel" has decided will be the nominees who
deserve entry to the Hall of Fame. The viewers have to vote (on a premium
rate phone-line, natch) to choose which one of the 10 goes in.
Last night was the turn of the 60's. So we had:
James Brown
Simon and Garfunkel
Beach Boys
Aretha Franklin
Velvet Underground
Bob Dylan
Rolling Stones
Kinks
Supremes
Jimi Hendrix
What the F*&%?!? No Byrds? No Doors? No Who?
Now I will concede that Aretha Franklin has a great voice (although I
absolutely DETEST that gospel-style singing - over emotive, melodramatic
clap-trap) but was she really all that popular or influential?
Velvet Underground WERE influential, but were they actually any good? I
always thought it a lot of it was style-over-content with them. (Similary
Joy Division who were nominated as one of the 80's Acts a few weeks ago)
Do Simon and Garfunkel really deserve to be in there with JB, The Stones,
Beach Boys and Hendrix?
Feel free to discuss .....
B^)
PS In case you are wondering why an obvious name is missing from the above
list, 5 acts get automatically shoed in: The Beatles, U2, Elvis Presley,
Bob Marley and Madonna - I'm sure the Beatles and Elvis are charmed to be
in such exalted company!
