I've heard Jill do this song live, and even performed it with her onstage 3
times, imitating the Chicago trumpet by pursing my lips to replicate the
effects created in studio by the loop (I have an mp3 to prove it). If you
want to criticize someone for ripping off with loops, this is the wrong
artist. She is a songwriting machine. This was a deliberate and knowing
(and effective) homage, the use of the Chicago song evoking the era the
lyrics to her song are about. She said Lamm was extremely nice about the
whole thing, and advised that she could simply recreate the loop so that it
would be cheaper.
Listen to the song a few times, and get past your original offense, and
remember that this is a prolific and talented and essentially independent
singer/songwriter who makes her living (barely) writing and performing.
This is not Janet Jackson. I think it is one of the songs of the year.
By the way, the song is about taking mushrooms and tripping in the park in
the 70s at the battle of the bands. What's not to like?
