It may be possible to dismiss Sly due to his horrible crash, but while
he was making music, there was no one better. Don't forget his influence
on Miles Davis...
Prior to his appearance with The Family Stone, he was a very important
producer, dj and musician in the Bay Area. Tom Donahue put him to work
as the Autumn Records house producer... The Great Society etc... He was
also the musical director for at least one of the historic Cow Palace
concerts that Donahue and KYA promoted. Phil Spector had done it the
year earlier.
It is a tragedy what happened to Sly. By the end of the 70's he'd become
the poster boy for excess. Not too many people have shot their career so
quickly. well usually they just died, saving us from the embarrassment.
In the grand scheme, Sly has pretty much be reduced to a few minutes in
Woodstock, and a couple of singles. His first four or five albums are
much more than 'funk", it was rock and roll at it's best, with no
barriers, no limits and no easy to define category.
