Just another "burn out" who got LUCKY and had a few Hits; "crashed and
burned" later on

...I usually read the posts and mostly let go of those that I consider to be total lack of judgement... This one I could not... It's my belief that Sly was a major musical force... the fact he was or was not someone's cuppa tea is a definite deciding factor, but to dismiss his music as lucky reflects a person's total lack of musical judgement (heaven forbid they should ever become a music critic for any trade magazine)...

For example, Motown is not one of my favorite musical periods yet I acknowledge the power, the force, the talent and the importance of the "Motown Sound" especially during the 60's and early to mid 70's... I hardly ever added a Motown act LP (or CD) to my collection and yet I purchased "Standing in the Shadow of Motown" DVD in acknowledgement to the sheer musical talent of "The Funk Brothers"...

Sly, once again IMHO, created some very distinct musical pieces that, aside from his personal substance problems, were tour-de-forces... I find it amusing when someone comes on here and demolishes a particular band they don't happen to like with a few keystrokes... If you consider yourself a musician I dare those critics to go into a studio and even attempt to create a sound that comes within an inch of what Sly was able to do in the studio... Easy to knock but not so to put your money where your mouth is...

I happen to play a few instruments and as much as I never like the "disco era" I have to acknowledge that some of the most talented producers (and singers) showcased their talents during this musical period... let alone me attempting to create anything even similar knowing that I'd fall flat on my face....

Ok, so I've over extended myself on this one, but once again, I wish we wouldn't use this great musical forum to type a few words and negatively simplify a particular artist just because we don't like their brand of music... The beauty of the recording industry is that there is so much to choose from and so many acts we can go back in time to STILL groove on thanks to recordings.... Next time you want to bash someone as harshly as you did Sly, go yourself into the studio and even attempt to create something as creative that can stand the test of time as he did... and also, be considerate and never drag a person's personal problems (like his addiction) into the fray.... Sorry but just had to express myself here...

Cheers,

MIguel
