I only say this in the name of spirited debate (I'm an affable fellow, not a
mean guy):
Up until Sly, we had Motown (The Funk Brothers), Stax, (Booker T, et al.)
and James Brown. These artists were full of rhythmic complexity and had
dozens of pop hits and their pre-Sly contributions shouldn't be negated. I
understand your point, but I would hardly say that Sly rescued funk from
triviality. His music was a natural outgrowth of these influences and he, in
turn, influenced his peers (listen to the Jackson Five's "ABC" with that
deliciously nasty fuzz guitar). A good groove can speak volumes and get
under your skin. Just because it's visceral doesn't mean it's trivial.
