While I didn't see the debacle with Ashlee Simpson, I think that the real
vitriol should be directed at SNL and uber-sellout Lorne Michaels. I always
hated Dick Clark for the absurd (though obvious) lip-synching on American
Bandstand (and how he later capitalized on the monster he had created with
the moronic karaoke show "Putting on the Hits"), but Clark wasn't trying to
be hip like SNL is. The show should have gone the way of the dinosaurs long
ago.
On the other hand, while you could tell from her reality show that Ashlee
Simpson didn't "deserve" her success, "Pieces of Me" is still a pretty good
single. And I don't care who was playing on the early Monkees records,
either.
