I've had the I "heart" Huckabees soundtrack running for a few days
now and I can whole "heart"edly recommend it to those on this list.
The songs are an extension of the melodic and lyrical themes Jon was
exploring on Meaningless, which director David O Russell cites as an
album of kindred spirited songs that led him to choose Brion for
Huckabees. In a very flattering liner note tribute, Russell goes on
to cite PT Anderson's Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love as sources for
his discovery of Jon's sound.
Jon Brion is a genre to himself.
The songs perfectly rest in that Beatles meets Nilsson meets Wilson
meets Bacharach category, Jon's rather nasally vocals are less
pinched here, something that I don't mind but a couple of friends had
noted with Meaningless, and I suspect that the actual songs may be
cannibalized from an intended full album of songs. We need a whole
album like that, by the way. But having said that, I happen to
think Jon's intsrumental passages have a melodic and evocative life
of their own that compliments the song material perfectly. I Heart
Huckabees soundtrack is a trove of delights, the work of an emerging
master who deserves more attention - although he's probably too busy
getting a studio tan to think about who is noticing his work.
