I'll chime in as well. I'm a hardcore Jon Brion fan, so I'll pick up
anything he does on his own at the very least. That said, there are a
handful of excellent tunes and a larger handful of small disappointments.
F'rinstance, some of the instrumental tracks from the soundtrack proper feel
like they need a vocal or need more "oomph" when they're not supporting a
visual. It does hang together very well for a soundtrack, to Shaun's point,
and is perhaps a more satisfying listen than, say, the Punch-Drunk Love
soundtrack (which certainly does have some pretty amazing moments).
Standard battery of Brionesque flourishes are on display -- harpsichord, all
kinds of chamberlain, flutes, vibes, keys, odd percussion bits -- overall
retro feel to the soundtrack tunes, and some major-league guitar work and
layered vox on the non-film songs (most of which relate to the songs on the
soundtrack and/or the themes of the film in some way).
Most of the full-on songs are definitely worth your money. And some of the
incidental music is really pretty cool. So that's another yes from this
camp.
