I did a review for this album back in 2001. If I remember correctly, I
think Blake wrote into Amplifier complaining about the less-than
stellar review I wrote. Here it is...
Blake Jones & The Trike Shop
A-Sides & B-Movies
Whispermaphone Records

What happens when you take a middle-class dad from Fresno, a cultural void in the wasteland of central California, give him an extensive knowledge of music and a collection of bizarre musical instruments, including toy pianos, accordion, marimbas and theremin? Well, you would undoubtedly get Blake Jones and the Trike Shop. To say his quirky musical ramblings are an acquired taste is an understatement. Not much about A-Sides & B-Movies is particularly accessible, save for bits and pieces of songs that feel as if they're headed for interesting musical territory, but are often sidetracked by silliness or Jones' Broadway-meets-lounge singer vocal stylings. Perhaps the album's cover note states it best: "File Under: Mad Pop Inventions".
