Wow, I'm absolutely stunned...Greg had e-mailed me only days before I left for Liverpool to ask for my help on a Stiv Bators tribute he was working on. Not only did he die young, but he looked even younger, a true example of the chestnut that living your life as a young person would does indeed keep you young.
Greg was a true pioneer and champion of pop music at a time when nobody else had the guts and foresight to celebrate its cause. He had a unique way of writing both critically and lovingly, with erudition and devotion. I had the pleasure of knowing him for several years, and I know that he did a lot of things for bands and music fans that fell under the radar, simply because Greg never really wanted to draw that kind of attention to himself. He turned me on to several bands over the years and I remember he made me a cassette of the (at the time) extremely rare Shoes album, Un Dans Versailles. I'll dearly miss our conversations about music, and I'll never forget all the nice things he had said about IPO over the years.
Greg Shaw will indeed be missed. There will never be anyone else like him.
David
