I've listened to it 2 or 3 times, and I find it very inconsistent. IMHO,
there are several really strong songs and more varied dynamics than their
past few records, but there's also a lot of ponderous, overdramatic
filler. Wow, some of those are going to be boring live. And I'm an
R.E.M. nut -- I'm seeing them for the 13th and 14th times in a few weeks.
(4th row @ MSG, baby!)
BTW, I thought Reveal was mediocre, Up ran hot and very cold, New
Adventures had great highs but should have been way shorter, and Monster
was their last great record. Yes, I love Monster. Sue me.
