Here are the music shows I saw during the recent Vancouver film
festival. If you visit the site www.viff.org you can read further info
on these and other films shown. I was sad to miss I, Curmudgeon by Alan
"Vinyl" Zweig and the UK doc on Americana hosted by Jim White.
DIG! Fan-freaking-tastic. This doc was many yrs in the making and is the
story of the love/hate friendship between the Dandy Warhols and Brian
Jonestown Massacre (or should I say, their leaders) two bands I'm not
especially keen on but it just didn't matter. It's opening nationwide
and is a must see.
BIG CITY DICK This was lovely and heartbreaking. A doc on Seattle's
Richard Peterson a musical savant who has played his trumpet on the
street since the mid 60's. He's released 4 cd's (and back in the day 2
lp's).
THE NOMI SONG Great doc on Klaus Nomi. I'm not too keen on spaceman
operatic art-punk but very much enjoyed.
Also, I recently saw JANDEK ON CORWOOD the doc about this mystery
musician who never does press or plays live. That is until last wknd
when Jandek played at a Wire magazine sponsored festival. Apparently he
would only play if his trio wasn't announced. The performance was
videotaped.
I hear there is a new TOWNES VAN ZANDT documentary that played the
Toronto fest, will keep my eyes out for that one.
regards, Judith
