But grinning ear to ear none the less....

Although I'm suffering incredible SMiLE envy as it looks like I'm just not going to able to see this tour, I was working in San Francisco this weekend and got to, errrr "open" for Al Jardine & his Endless Summer Beach Band. (It was a corporate banquet thingy and I was ummmm, speaking, not singing, but got to have a slightly extended chat with him before the show).

Anyway, he was a really, really nice guy and is obviously more than a mere Beach Boy, he's quite a fan too, and actually somewhat giddy about having gotten to partake of the rarified air. Got to get my copy of Sunflower signed and ask him lots of questions (he just oooozed admiration for Brian, the new Smile, etc; he just tosses off the legendary discord "it's ever only been about money and really only about one guy's problems with it, never about the music"; Brian mapped out just about everything including guitar parts, etc.) He seemed genuinely tickled that I knew about his stuff and all the later work, encouraging him to include stuff like California Saga, etc. He is wrestling with that whole making new stuff versus endless oldies shows thing which obviously makes the best business case.

Which, speaking of oldies shows, was really well executed, albeit only-the-hits galore. Having seen the BBs nearly 20 times over the years, it was a real treat to watch up close and check out his extremely competent rhythm guitar parts from somewhere other than the 200th row. But I was totally stunned after the show... he came over, friggin thanked me for my interest, and gave me a signed (and personalized) set list and his pick. Geeeez. I mean we all know how nice the Jeremy Morris's and Walter Clevenger's of the pop world are, but how cool is it that a Beach Boy is too?

Having one of those bitchen fan moments that only those that populate the likes of Audities can sort-of-relate to.
NP: IPO Vol 4 of course....
