Don't pick it up. It's truly dreadful. It started out as a Mike Love
solo album, and then one by one Bruce, Carl and finally Al (who had
been sacked from the group but was reinstated by the end) joined in.
Carl and Al both do some credible vocals - to the extent that some
people even find the chorus to Lahaina Aloha listenable - but the only
original that isn't a Love/Melcher song is Bruce Johnston's Slow
Summer Dancing.
If you really *must* get the album, get the European version. They
went into the studio and made some minor changes for the European
release - Roger McGuinn played and sang on the title track, they
restored the bridge on Under The Boardwalk (with a good Al vocal) and
made it slightly less unlistenable - you'll probably only need a few
years in therapy if you get that one.
I thought that would be the absolute nadir of Beach Boys recordings,
but a couple of years ago Bruce Johnston claimed that the vocals on
the SIP version of Surfin' had been given to the people who made the
Macarena to remix 'in a Britney Spears style'. Thankfully, that hasn't
surfaced...
