This week's Phoenix has the heartening news that Waltham has signed with
Rykodisc (who are back to being a Boston-based label after an unfortunate
alliance with Palm Pictures) and are issuing a new album in early 2005 that
will be half remixed/re-recorded songs from PERMISSION TO BUILD and half
new material. More details to come, I'm sure.

Speaking of Pino Brothers-related news: after a period of inactivity
coinciding with being dropped by RCA (who had no frickin' idea what to do
with last year's excellent FROM THE ATTIC), Damone are once again gigging
around Boston. In fact, they're playing a NEMO showcase tonight with
Meghan Toomey and the So-And-So's, another of my fave local bands. I
haven't een keeping up with local scuttlebutt, so I have no idea if
notorious flake Dave Pino (ex-Waltham songwriter, who wrote all the songs
on FROM THE ATTIC, supposedly back when he was in high school) is in any
way still affiliated with the band.

Incidentally, a new favorite of mine that will be right up many Auditeers'
musical alley is a trio from Jamaica plain called Mittens, whose
self-titled album is what the Shins would have sounded like if they had
been heavily influenced by Squeeze. Details at
