FF sold out the Riviera (capacity of about 2,500) a
few weeks before last night's gig. I had seen Franz
at the Empty Bottle (capacity 225 or so) less than
seven months earlier.

I knew something was different when I was in line to
get a Futureheads shirt pre-show. Not only was I the
oldest person in line, but if you added the ages of
any two folks in the queue, I still was older. The
main floor was dominated by teens, more than 50%
female -- these Scots may now be the thinking gal's
Duran Duran for the 21st Century. On the next level,
the crowd skewed more towards college and older.

I thought that was fantastic -- a talented pop group
that appeals to a wide array of fans.

Futureheads were smoking. Great harmonies, great
drummer and incredible energy. Much like Franz
Ferdinand, they have a knack for coming up with
memorable riffs that move a song to another level.
They also impressively negotiated the sometimes tricky
shifts in their songs. Can't wait to see them
headline at the Bottle in Nov.

The Delays -- the lead singer has an amazing falsetto.
Their vibe is The La's meet Madchester. A swell
performance, though it couldn't match the other two
bands. However, the keyboardist should be slapped
around a bit. A loutist twit, he is.

As for Franz Ferdinand -- they exuded confidence,
sharply dressed, genially playing the rock starts that
they deserve to be, with a nifty lighting set up to
give a dance ambiance to the affair. They've added
some bits to a few songs, making them that much more
fun live. A few songs are being played a hair faster.
They just have their sound down.

And the crowd ate it up. Every song was cheered
rapturously and many were singing along throughout.
The main floor was a combo disco-light mosh pit.
These guys create excitement and no one in the Riv
seemed immune to it.

Great show.

Mike Bennett
