So, just as I am feeling like the guy in the Onion article, feeling like I am
getting too old to be a music fan, I suddenly have an experience which
reminds me why I can never give up music:
Saturday night I had the good fortune to see Cliff play at the brand new
World Cafe Live venue in Philly (http://www.worldcafelive.com). This was opening
weekend and it seems like a pretty nice place- there is a big room downstairs
and a smaller venue at street level with a restaurant. Cliff was one of the
local folks picked to play and we were psyched to check it out. He went on 2nd to
last and totally lucked out in that the crossover for the two shows
downstairs happened during his set and the place was overly packed.
In any case, the guy after Cliff was just great. BC Camplight, though his
real name is Brian Christinzio. It was a trio setup with piano bass and drums and
in an acoustic room like that was somewhat reminiscent of BFF. Interesting
and catchy harmonies, lyrics, poppy but not twee. We bought two copies of the EP
he had for sale and I could not stop listening to it at work today, as I type
this one of the songs is running through my head like a madman!
The CD is fleshed out a bit with more instrumentation, and the first band it
reminds me of is King Radio, esp. Are You the Sick Passenger stylee. Also a
wee bit of Papas Fritas. Burt Bacharach maybe.
I checked out the website and there are MP3s of 3 of the 5 songs on the EP-
you just GOTTA listen to them! (Produced by Brian McTear, who also did the
Knobs' latest)
Looks like he did a few dates with the Bigger Lovers and is going to be doing
some dates with The Color Bars & Joe "the problem with" Sweeney (and my faves
the Hang Ups!!)
