this weekend is not only the weekend that the red sox clinch the AL east,
it's also the weekend of the NEMO music conference in boston, and my band is
heading up north to celebrate both. i'd love to invite any and all boston
auditeers to see the trouble dolls on saturday night at the lizard lounge.

we're playing at 9:30 pm, and the bill also includes fooled by april,
lincoln conspiracy, cyanide valentine and brilliant mistakes.

there appear to be a bunch of other good shows going on over the weekend,
from the von bondies to waxwings to our fellow brooklynites oxford collapse
to ad frank, and lots more. but can someone tell me if the "charo" billed
on saturday afternoon is actually charo? because we might have to get there
early for that.

And it's also the weekend that the Montreal Expos play their final games in
New York. Their last home game was tonight against the Mariners. They move
to Washington next season.

End of a friggin' era......and to think Canada's baseball representation has

been left in the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays. Bah!

Oh my. Muni was a legend and the dean of New York FM radio. He was
knowledgeable about music on so many levels; they didn't call him the
Professor for nothing.

I grew up in New York and listened to him every chance I got. I interviewed
him a couple of times for stories I was writing for a radio trade newspaper,
a
couple of lifetimes ago, and he was always very cordial and helpful. I spoke
to him when Alison Steele died--another incredible staple of New York FM
radio--and he had a few great stories that really spoke to how the WNEW
jocks
helped each other.

Scotso, as he was known back in his WABC days--he was a teen jock when the
Beatles hit New York--will be missed more than words can express. I don't
think he looked back on his WABC days with fondness, but it's part of his
legacy, a strong legacy that will live on forever.

If it's the same as a few months ago, Rod's cousin Jim Rodford (of the
band Argent) is on bass, Jim's son on drums and Keith Airey on guitar.

If you haven't seen them yet, this one is not to be missed. Here's my
review of the show that was posted here, which somebody has incorporated
into their blog (whaddya know -- I'm published!):

Brian needs a steady collaborator to work with on lyrics instead of "guest
star" writers and artists. The last successful one was Andy Pailey.

I agree somewhat but the production of "Gettin'" is too raw and needed more
work - with the way Brian's voice is now he really needs to be doubled and
tripled tracked. It sounds like Brian and Co knocked this out quick while
saving thier energies for Smile. I still love "Fairy Tale" silly lyrics and
all, but I prefer the early 90's demo version of the title track better.

I enjoyed it - it was nice having them have a #1 again. But it doomed all
the
Beach Boys sporatic later matieral to the same formula and production (Still
Cruisin', Make It Big, Problem Child - Yeech!) What saves the whole song
for me
is Carl's great ride-in vocal part for the chorus. Though Mike Love gloats
that
it was "His" record that beat Brian's solo debut you have to give credit to
Papa John Philips and Scott McKenzie (who recorded "If You're Going To San
Francisco") for coming up with the basics for the song - before anyone
thought of getting the Beach Boys to record it.

I still prefer Bob & Tom's great parody - "Camel Toe"!

The group "BUBBLE" recorded a Lennon-esque version for thier S/T Debut EP.

But also if you caught his syndicated show, "Ticket To Ride." I discovered
it right as I was discovering the Beatles, and it introduced me to more Fab
Four than I could shake a stick at, as well as members of the group's
extended musical family, like Harry Nilsson, to name but one. I suspect I
still have some ratty, label-less tapes of the show in a box somewhere.

So long, Scott...

I must have missed the start of this thread. Are we talking about the Beach
Boys' "Kokomo"? I hate to say it, but it's probably my favorite song of
theirs (or Brian solo) in all the years following the excellent "Do It
Again". Not that this is saying much.

I'm probably going to make some waves, so I'll start by saying that I can't
see putting any other album over Smile on my year's best list.

That said, I am perhaps the only one here a tad disappointed with Smile. I
mean, its great to hear Brian's masterwork completed. But it sounds
too"modern" for my ears; I can't, for example, ever see liking this "Heroes
and Villians" better than the vintage takes (and I mean the ones with the
"cantina" section.) There was a magic to the harmonies of these young
brothers and cousin that was of a particular time and place, and while this
album is great, I've got a copy of "Mok Smile"-- a version assembled by a
fan from the original sessions after Brian performed the piece in England,
using that as a blueprint-- and frankly I like the version cobbled together
from the original sessions better.

On the one hand it probably isn't fair to compare anything to the mystical
original Smile, and like I say, it is my album of the year. And it sounds
just great. But perhaps it sounds too great, if you know what I mean?
