Oh my. Muni was a legend and the dean of New York FM radio. He was
knowledgeable about music on so many levels; they didn't call him the
Professor for nothing.
I grew up in New York and listened to him every chance I got. I interviewed
him a couple of times for stories I was writing for a radio trade newspaper, a
couple of lifetimes ago, and he was always very cordial and helpful. I spoke
to him when Alison Steele died--another incredible staple of New York FM
radio--and he had a few great stories that really spoke to how the WNEW jocks
helped each other.
Scotso, as he was known back in his WABC days--he was a teen jock when the
Beatles hit New York--will be missed more than words can express. I don't
think he looked back on his WABC days with fondness, but it's part of his
legacy, a strong legacy that will live on forever.
