I've just listened to Smile for the first time, and while I'm not yet blown
away, I did like it (especially "Wonderful," long a favorite of mine), and
intend to listen more. I was surprised that I liked the version of "Good
Vibrations" that closes the album; I generally don't care to hear an artist re-visit
older material (except, of course, in concert), but this was nice. Perhaps the
altered lyrics made it seem to me less like a remake, and more like a part of
Smile. I dunno, but it didn't jump out at me as the inappropriate remake I
was expecting.
When I bought Smile yesterday, the record store was playing the new
Green Day album American Idiot on the sound system. I haven't listened to it
yet, but the in-store play was sufficient for me to know I had to buy it, even
though I had no prior intention of getting it. Where Smile looks to be a
record I'll enjoy more with each play, the Green Day record provided an immediate,
visceral rush.
