While Jaimie's thoughts are logical, I think the song is more realistic than
ironic -- no matter how much a person wants to work things out, the thought
remains that "I am right". This song would be effective in a duet, with
both parties having the exact same sentiments.
As for bridges in general -- they can serve different purposes -- sometimes
they provide a counterpoint, musically and/or lyrically, or just provide a
nifty musical detour that adds a climax when the seemingly different bridge
resolves itself with the primary melody (Andy Partridge does this about as
well as anyone). Then there are bridges that are there to stitch together
the verse and the chorus, and when it can be done in a way where the main
melodic or rhythmic idea is built on every step of the way.
I note Stephen Merritt's comments on not needing bridges is simply ignorant.
I don't mean that every song needs a bridge, but they're a useful device,
just like singing well...
